A Word to Therapists & Helping Professionals

You’ve spent years helping people heal.  What if you could help them grow too?   I don’t need to convince you that you're good at helping people.  But as a former licensed therapist myself, I know how it can get over time.  You may be burned out.   You may feel boxed in by insurance payments and bureaucracy.  You may feel trapped by your scope of practice and only being able to help people who reside in the State you’re licensed in.  I’m here to give you the GOOD NEWS! There is a clear, low risk bridge from where you are now to where Coaching could take you.  Coaching gives you more income, more flexibility, more freedom, more clients to access (the WORLD is your market!).  Becoming a Certified Coach is a credential that fits alongside what you already have.

Coaching is in Demand

Personal coaching--also referred to as life coaching -- is the wave of the future for therapists. The definition of coaching is “helping people achieve goals.’’ What this means is that the therapist provides specific services to help people with overall or specific life improvement.

There is a large and growing market in the U.S. and abroad for personal coaching services. As the income and educational level rises among a population, there are more people who will desire and value professional assistance to achieve their goals.

Since there is an over-abundance of therapists in almost every city in the United States, therapists are searching to create alternatives to traditional psychotherapy, such as coaching, consulting and teaching. Not only can coaching attract new clients and therefore more business for the practicing therapist, it can also assist in reducing job burnout. Coaching provides an avenue for attracting a high-functioning clientele -- people who are not coming to therapy because of a medical necessity but because they want overall life improvement. Coaching specialists tend to attract clients who are goal-oriented already and thus change and grow quickly, thereby helping the therapist to feel more productive and successful. Coaching is also an area in which it is relatively easy to measure gains made in treatment by clients--they have either achieved their goals (or sub-goals) or they haven't. This clarity can provide the therapist with a greater sense of professional satisfaction and enjoyment.

Another huge benefit to therapists is that coaching is typically not covered by insurance and clients will be paying your fee at the time of service.

According to the Coach University web site, the demand for coaching and coaches has doubled in the past year and contines to grow at a rapid pace. The existence of over 50 coach training programs on the web in the U.S. alone, which provide training programs for people interested in becoming coaches, is a testament to the popularity of coaching.

Therapists have an enormous advantage over others who are interested in becoming coaches because they have already been trained in psychological change theory. Most experienced therapists already know how to operate a practice, attract clients, and work with individuals on particular life issues. Therapists are accustomed to joining, empathizing, asking questions rather than criticizing or supplying answers. These are skills at which many coaches are not adept. Moreover, whereas other coaches are not trained to deal effectively when deeper psychological issues arise during the coaching process, therapists can handle both modes effectively.

Many of the leaders in the psychology profession have paved the way by becoming successful coaches and consultants. Richard Suinn, Ph.D., a past President of the American Psychological Association, is a sports psychologist. In fact, he was the first psychologist to serve on a U.S. Olympic sports medicine team (Psychology Today, 1999). Suinn assists athletes in preparing for athletic events and improving athletic performance, a popular area of motivational coaching. Ron Fox, Ph.D., another past president of the APA is a business consultant. Martin Seligman, another past president of the APA, now has a coach training organization called “authentic happiness coaching.” Jim Loehr, Ed.D. calls himself a “performance coach.”

As our society becomes more affluent, the demand for personal coaches becomes greater. It has become widely accepted in the U.S. for people to hire professionals to coach them in many ways -- athletic training heading the list. Additionally, more people are inclined to hire a “coach” as opposed to a “therapist” as there is less stigma involved. In fact, it has become a “status symbol.” People hire coaches, teachers, and personal trainers in all other areas of life: there are weight-lifting coaches, dance teachers, college professors, academic tutors, business consultants, bridal consultants, travel consultants, etc. Coaching and consulting are becoming pervasive in America, and their applicability to goal achievement is clear. Personal coaching is the wave of the future for therapists, so it is a great niche to specialize in and use to build your practice.

What People Are Saying About GROW'S CPC Program

Lyn,
In my years of training to be a coach, the best, most efficient and economical training I have found is yours, Lyn. That’s because your courses are designed by therapists for therapists. Your seminars are packed full of practical information that can be used to start a lucrative private coaching practice now. I have taken tons of coaching courses. Yours are the best.
--Stan Mann, DCSW, PCC, Detroit, MI

Hey Lyn,  I want to commend you on the work you’re doing, because you are a therapist and already have an understanding of what we’re doing. You are doing really, really good work with your CPC Program. I just went to a 3 day coach training through another coach organization and I must tell you, I am more behind you, beside you, in front of you, and around you than ever before because of what you’re doing. The quality that you are giving to professionals is invaluable. I just wanted to tell you that!
--Cathy Nelson, LMFT, CPC, Sonoma, CA

Hello Lyn,

Your seminar lit a fire under me, or should I say a bonfire. I am making multiple changes, and almost feel overwhelmed that I can’t make them fast enough. One item on the list is to do your coaching training and become a CPC. I have had about 75-100 hours in the Corporate Coach U program, which I abandoned, realizing I was more of a therapist and didn’t want to work with the corporate world. Your exercise at the end of our seminar made me realize I had made coaching too complicated. Thanks for your motivation – your seminar more than paid for itself already.

-–Beth Strong, LPC, Denver, CO

Dear Lyn,

I just wanted to let you know that I very much appreciated the workshop Friday and loved your spirit. Hopefully, becoming a CPC will allow me to see clients who want my strengths perspective and to fly above the radar as opposed to under it as I have during the past three and a half years. Thanks again for your generosity in what you promote. You clearly have found your niche and bravo to you for willingness to share it so magnanimously with others.
